Selenopidae – or Flattie

29 Jun

 .

This pretty little wall crab spider is called a flattie – this one was (was) about 7 inches in diameter and maybe 1/4 inch thick – maybe thinner, It is like a trick – if you try and look at it ‘on the flat’ it almost disappears.  They are very common but startle the curds and whey out of you when you see one hanging on your wall….They are harmless and actually beneficial as they eat mosquitos,

They can hang motionless for hours then move so fast you think someone has pulled them along with a string – and there go your curds and whey again – I have sent my tuffet out to be dry cleaned……………………..

Try not to adopt one to bring home for a pet, the mozzies are not that bad here. Glad to hear they are harmless, but probably a good idea not to try to pet one.
